Why Don’t Laptops Have HDMI Input?

Have you ever wondered if your TV or monitor can take HDMI in then why your laptop can’t do the same?

So you might be thinking why don’t laptops have an HDMI input? and what is the reason behind it?

Laptops when comes to portability are great devices for daily use that’s why some people may want to use them as HDMI input but they can’t.

Keep reading, you will get to know why this is so.

Why don’t laptops have an HDMI input?

Laptops are not designed to take HDMI input as it requires special hardware which increases the overall cost. And because of short-length cables, laptops use LVDS ( Low-Voltage Differential Signaling ) whereas HDMI requires high voltages.

Laptops are mostly power efficient and they use comparatively less power than PC.

As I mentioned earlier, laptops don’t have an HDMI input because laptops use LVDS ( Low-Voltage Differential Signaling ) or low voltages for display. But the HDMI signals require pretty high voltage and such voltages can’t be provided by the laptop.

To provide enough voltages for HDMI there needs to have a converter for that so it can work properly.

So this is the reason why laptops don’t have HDMI input.

Laptops are mostly ideal for people who love portable devices. They can take them anywhere. That is why every day they are getting slimmer and slimmer.

Another reason why they don’t have HDMI in is, this feature is not so common among people. In simple words, most people usually don’t need this feature in laptops.

People rarely demand HDMI input in laptops which is why laptop manufacturers don’t put this into consideration. Instead, they work for user demands such as high power efficiency in laptops.

Do all laptops don’t have HDMI input?

Yes, Laptops usually don’t have HDMI input and that is why all laptops have only HDMI output which means they can only project their screen to an external monitor.

It is interesting to note here that, the HDMI port looks the same for input and output. The HDMI port on your laptop which is the output only looks the same as the HDMI port on your monitor which can take HDMI input.

So don’t think that if both ports look the same, they can work the same too.

Can you use your laptop’s HDMI port as input?

No, you can’t use your laptop’s  HDMI port as input because laptops are not designed to take input in through the HDMI port. You can only use your laptop’s HDMI port for output.

Why do we use HDMI over VGA and DVI?

VGA cable is capable of transmitting only video signals whereas HDMI can transmit both, video and audio signals.

Not only that, HDMI cables are quite cheap and are less prone to interference.

Another reason is that, in most of the devices you see such as a Laptop, TV, or monitor, there is at least one HDMI port in all these devices. So, HDMI can be used on almost all devices.

HDMI also provides you with good resolution and frames per second as compared to VGA and DVI.

So these are a few reasons HDMI is preferred in all electronic devices which has a display.
